With an overall height of 94 m the steeple of St. Jakob's is the highest of its kind in Carinthia. It was famous as early as back in the Middle Ages, when an Italian chronicler found in 1486 that its architecture was unmatched even in Venice.

The lower part of the original, medieval steeple has been preserved up to the present day. Following a series of fires and damage due to earthquakes it was renovated several times in the course of many centuries. Its present appearance and height date back to 1847.

Today, the tower is owned by the parish of St. Jakob. It has been open to the public since 1993 and makes a splendid viewpoint.
